Thanks to Alaska’s ‘midnight sun’, farmers can take advantage of nearly 24 hours of sunlight during the summer months. Explore the different farmlands of Alaska, from the coast of Kachemak Bay in Homer, to Talkeetna and the Mat-Su Valley, all the way into the subarctic region in Fairbanks. Discover how with an average growing season of 105 days, Alaska farmers produce record breaking harvests and delicious opportunities for best of “farm-to-table” cuisine.

Day 1

Arrive in Anchorage

Upon arrival at the Anchorage Airport, receive a personal greeting and meet your private driver and for a transfer to your hotel.

Day 2

Anchorage to Homer

Today, journey with your private driver/guide to the coastal town of Homer. The drive along the scenic Turnagain Arm features the glacier-filled Chugach Mountains to your left and the rapidly-moving waters of Cook Inlet to your right. Along the way consider stopping at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center to visit the animals the Center rescues and rehabilitates to hopefully reintroduce into the wild. Continue along the Kenai Peninsula to Homer, the ‘Halibut Fishing Capital of the World’. Your private driver/guide can provide suggestions for sightseeing along the way or recommendations for dinner in Homer.

Day 3

Explore the Farms of Homer

Spend today getting an exclusive glimpse into Homer’s livestock, organic vegetables, blossoming peonies, and oyster farms during a day touring local farms. Your private driver/guide will provide valuable insights throughout the day and can provide additional local sightseeing suggestions. Visit an oyster farm or taste the latest vintages at one of Homer’s wineries to cap off your day of fun.

Day 4

Homer to Palmer: The Heart of the Matanuska-Susitna Valley

Join your private driver/guide and venture into the heart of Alaska’s agriculture area as you make your way from Homer to the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. This scenic valley is rimmed by three mountain ranges: the Alaska Range, the Talkeetna Mountains, and the Chugach Mountains. Like many parts of Alaska, the area was carved by glaciers and due to the abundant sunlight in the summer farmers are able to grow record-breaking produce.

Day 5

Farm to Table in the Mat-Su Valley

Spend your customized day exploring the fertile Matanuska-Susitna (Mat-Su) Valley with your private driver/guide. Visit local farms and learn what makes the valley an ideal location for farming, and the secrets to growing produce in such rugged Alaska terrain. This evening your driver/guide can offer suggestions for the best place for dinner in Palmer to experience farm-to-table cuisine.

Day 6

Pick Your Own Produce

Enjoy another custom day exploring farms in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. Visit a local farm that will let you pick out your own produce to sample, and taste the freshness for yourself. Your private driver/guide can provide additional suggestions for sightseeing and photo opportunities you might enjoy on your travels.

 

Day 7

Palmer to Talkeenta: Meet Reindeer and Musk Ox

Along with vegetables and flowers, the Matanuska-Susitna River Valley is home to a variety of private farms featuring Alaska wildlife. Enjoy an exclusive visit to the Reindeer Farm and Musk-Ox Farm before traveling further north to the quaint town of Talkeetna. Talkeetna is known as the departure point for those who wish to summit Denali and hosts a bustling Main Street with a plethora of local shops and restaurants.

Day 8

Talkeetna to Fairbanks

This morning learn about the birch sap harvest in Alaska’s forests as you sample birch syrup and wild fruits from one of the first Birch Syrup processing locations. Talkeetna is also a popular location for those who wish to get a closer look at the iconic mountain of Denali on a flightseeing tour. Consider adding one before departing for Fairbanks with your private driver/guide. Your private driver/guide can offer sightseeing and photo opportunities along your journey by private vehicle to ‘The Golden Heart City’.

Day 9

Farming in Fairbanks at The Fairbanks Experiment Farm and Gold Panning

Today, get a glimpse into Interior Alaska’s farming history as you visit a few local Fairbanks farms. Farming in Fairbanks began with the discovery of gold in the late 1800’s. The Fairbanks Experiment Farm was created and has paved the way for other farmers in the area. Today, the horticulturalists at the farm continue to develop a variety of grains, perennial plants, trees, and shrubs that thrive in subarctic and arctic climates.

Enjoy a final evening in Fairbanks relaxing or you may want to try your hand at the historic pastime of gold-panning.

 

Day 10

Depart Fairbanks

Today, say farewell to Alaska and receive a private transfer to the Fairbanks Airport for your departure flight.
